Jean-Claude Ellena's new Voyage D'Hermes

This perfume (and I do mean perfume), sucker-punched me from the off. From it's sleek travel packaging with it's mental swivel base stirrup (an Hermes saddle tack marks the bottle's centre of gravity) to its heavyweight, dense black glass bottle, this means business and smacks of subtle luxury.

Just as Hermes is synonymous with leather and lifestyle luxury, perfumer, Jean-Claude Ellena's distinctive fragrances for the brand are imbued with the high life without ever being gaudy or gauche. This is refinement at its best. If you buy into a luxury brand as prestigious as Hermes, one expects the best in olfactory notes.
Hermes Voyage d'Hermes is the latest attack on the luxury fragrance global market and it sure turns heads. From its initial bust of citrus green, alpine fresh cushioned in fresh water droplets which soon blasts into a hefty doze of fine black pepper and a soft warm comforting musky amber. Voyage d'Hermes is an enigma in that it's both strong and subtle, complex yet easy on the nose. It's termed as 'unisex' but seemed resolutely masculine of first wear. It's not for every woman and takes strength of personality and a maturity to pull this off but if it's your bag, gosh, it's good. Voyage d'Hermes seems to fit the new breed of fragrances like Comme des Garcons Wonderwood and appears to take its inspiration both from the leather and manliness in Hermes history as well as a newly architectured approach in perfumery that replaces floral with intelligent appeal for women.
Says Jean-Claude Ellena, "This time the contrast comes from direct contact between fresh spices (cardamom and juniper) and warm woods, while amber - which is there in light touches - plays its part as a binder and enhancer while also adding body to the composition."

Voyage d'Hermes is available currently priced £87 for 100ml
