Guerlain is an eponymous house basing its scents and new releases on tradition and none more so that the latest limited edition release (available exclusively at Harrods from 1st May). Muguet, a reworked perfume that is steeped in floral wondrousness and billows at you, enveloping the wearer in gallons of intense lily and purple tinged, fresh lilac from the first spray has to be tried to be believed. She's so overblown in her enthusiasm, that she almost knocks you off your feet at first meeting.
Muguet is a juxtoposition - a fragrance so complex in its make-up to garner its heritage position and yet, so blindingly simple in its appeal. Muguet, or Lily of the Valley, is steeped in heritage, being one of the most traditionally worn scents of the past two centuries, but it also carries a stigma in that it reeks of old society, of old age, of a more rigid set of rules and culture - the antithesis of today's score of pink pepper and gourmand tinged mass scents. And for that fact alone, it's due a re-surge.
Muguet would work perfectly, worn with some of today's more avante garde designers verging on the couture like Mary Katranzou or Michael van der Ham. To work, Muguet has to be contrasted against an extremely feminine, modernist backdrop - she may be too much at times but she will be remembered.
Perfumer, Thierry Wasser, invites us to discover this good-luck fragrance that combines a feeling of freshness and grace. Lily of the valley notes reign supreme in the composition. Lively and capricious, they set a vibrant and sparkling tone for the entire creation.
The first bursts of scent are fresh green notes, then, lily of the valley takes centre stage, accompanied by lilac - an amorous duo that makes the senses take flight. Then, the richness of delicately gathered rose united with the opulence of jasmine gives the silage all the sensuality and sweetness of romantic emotions, trailing silk, chiffon and gauze.
This year, Muguet comes in the iconic Guerlain “quadrilobe” bottle, a shape designed at the very start of the 20th century. To celebrate the month of May in 2012, it is has been adorned with an exquisite jewellery piece crafted by Gripoix, founded in 1869, the ultimate Parisian couture jewellery House.
The jewellery piece designed for Guerlain was created from glass paste hand-gilded with fine gold by craftsmen. Inspired by a jewellery set created by Gripoix in the Roaring Twenties, it represents a leaf. The chain of the jewellery piece is wrapped around the neck like a necklace. The two ends of the necklace bear the G of Guerlain and Gripoix, as well as a discreet golden plaque with the number of the bottle. A light, fine label bears the name Muguet.
This Limited Edition fragrance is available for purchase on 1st May 2012 exclusively at Harrods priced at £355 for 60ml.
